Amber silhouettes

Bathed in the fiery hues of a summer sunset, the Olympic coast puts on a breathtaking display. Amber clouds paint the sky, casting dramatic silhouettes of rugged cliffs and stoic pines against the vibrant backdrop. Waves gently lap the shore, completing this serene coastal scene.

Witnessing this spectacle in what was initially just a casual summer backpack with friends was a truly unforgettable experience. This was one of the many spectacular stills I captured during the two nights on the peninsula.

End of an year

At first glance, it just seems like a regular sunset view over the Puget Sound by Seattle in the Pacific northwest. But observe closely and you can spot the telltale signs of high altitude winds from the layers of undulating cloud patterns in the sky. These high altitude cloud patterns are the result of layers of wind blowing over mountain ranges that dot the western coast of Washington state. And these layers will often catch the colorful sunset light, adding to extra drama in the image.

A Washington State Ferry departing to Bainbridge island from Seattle adds to the visual interest in this scene overlooking the sound.

Here is to a closure on 2024, a tumultuous year for many in this world.

On the rocks

Browsing through the archives, my eye spotted this interesting composition. This particular scene was a sunset in the rugged Olympic coastline in Washington state. What drew my eye was how nature (represented by the tree) managed to survive the unrelenting vagaries of weather that this region experiences, especially during the winter rains. The tree also acts as a kind of focal point, drawing attention away from the harshness of the rest of the scene.

Spring Palette

Here are more visions of the California landscape from springs of years past. Vast surfaces of dusty brown that characterize the rolling hills and fallow lands during summer acquire a fresh coat of green. And out in the Central Valley, dry dustpans suddenly become wetlands harboring migratory birds. This is often the time I seek out hiking trails that take me out of civilization, to witness biomes and climate as it once had been.

Wonderwall

One of the perks of being stuck at home is to go back and comb the archives for hidden gems. The improvement in editing techniques can lease new life to old images that I had discarded as 'uneditable'. Lightroom's capabilities to selectively filter regions based on luminance and color ranges have proved invaluable in this.

This was one such image, which proved difficult to edit at the time I shot it (6 years ago) due to the high dynamic range. While I did take a few bracketed exposures of this scene, and shot a few others with a graduated ND filter, the former lacked sharpness due to lack of a tripod to keep the camera steady, and the latter introduced visual artifacts that were proving challenging to remove. With the new capabilities of LR, I was able to control exposure in a much better manner, and restore the photo to what I actually experienced at the scene.

A New Winter

The winter has been slow to come by in the Pacific Northwest in 2023. A warmer than usual winter meant that snow fell instead as rain, and the precipitation has been lower than expected for this time of the year (60% of normal). The last week saw the first major winter storm to hit the mountains, coating the Cascades with the light layer of fluffy snow.

I managed to make one last hike out here before the holidays hoping to catch alpenglow on a snow-covered Mt Shuksan. This was one of the compositions I made while freezing out on a mountain-top.

Happy New Year. And here is to hoping 2024 is just as colorful.

Pike Place Colors

A couple of weeks ago during one of those dazzling winter sunsets, the sky turned to a fiery spectacle. Bands of colorful clouds arced across the entire sky, turning slowly from yellows to reds to purples as the sunset progressed. While walking around the market, I found the blazing sign of Pike Place Market highlighting the fiery colors behind it. Composing this frame while minding vehicular traffic and people proved to be a challenge.

The border peaks

On the rugged terrain on the border with Canada are a set of three iconic peaks: Mt Larrabee, the American Border Peak and the Canadian Border Peak. A sunset view at any time of the year is spectacular. But at the right time of the year, the juxtaposition of colors, snow and light make for a memorable scene. Hope I can get to experience this once more before the season ends.

Last Light

Climbing high above the clouds puts one in a special place, a place where your only concern is survival. It seems like a place removed from the realities of everyday life and humdrum work, of politics and power struggles, and of the pressures of time and place. Out here, you can sit and admire the slow changes in the sky as the sun sets, and of the blue mountain ranges giving way to the twinkling lights of cities far in the horizon.

Eventually, the cold takes over, forcing you to settle in for the long night, but not before capturing one last look.

Summer Trails

During the long days of summer, I often find myself heading to this one spot to watch the sun set over the endless mountain ranges. At places like these, I often wonder which trails wander through innumerable valleys and meadows, which ones climb to the mountaintops for panoramic views, and which ones hide my very own wilderness.
