Lake Tahoe has two faces: a winter side where skiers congregate from all over to enjoy the soft puffy powder, and a summer side where azure blue waters draw vacationers to an aquatic bliss.
Which face do you enjoy?

Above Atitlan
When I first heard the name Lake Atitlan, it conjured up a a god from Mayan mythology, an overseer who overlooked a pristine lake in a caldera of a volcanic nation. It turned out to be partially true, as it was the name given to one of the many volcanoes that ring this glistening lake in the mountainous center of the country.
My first glimpse of the lake was during a multi-day trek that terminated on an overlook of this lake. We arrived at this viewpoint at before dawn, in the calm stillness of the night. The jeweled lights of the villages dotting the lake mirrored the star-spangled banner that was the sky. Venus shone brightly above the eastern horizon anchoring the sky, while the blazoned gold of Fuego's eruption did so for the volcanic horizon. And below it, the dark glassy blue of the lake stretched into the distance, interrupted only by the shimmering reflections of the city lights.
It was freezing at the viewpoint in the early morning, and I was only warmed by hot cocoa slipping down my throat. And despite the lake of sleep, my mind was fully engaged in taking this expansive view of Lake Atitlan.

Reflections at Valhalla
This lake, out in the Cascades, is perhaps one of my most favorite lakes to visit during the summer. It offers clear reflections of the surrounding landscape, has a nearby viewpoint to get a birds eye view, and is just an easy backpack away. While the summer sees plenty of PCT hikers jostling for space on its still shores, the shoulder season is a great time to catch this alpine lake in the heart of the mountains.

Entering Fall
Who is ready for fall in the PNW? This transitional time of the year, though short, has some of the best color palettes. Golden larches, orange and red shurbs, grey granite and blue-white snow all come together in a wonderful symphony of colors. And even though I sometimes wish it can stay like this year around, it is the fleeting nature of the colors that make it special.
Hope you get to enjoy the colorful foliage this time of the year. Check out WTA for ideas on where to go.

The Sierras of Washington
I hardly expected to see a granite landscape in the PNW. The unique geology of the Cascades means that most of the granite is covered under thick layers of sediment, and only gets exposed in the higher elevations (unless its not already covered by snow, glaciers or even older metamorphic rocks). The Alpine Lakes Wilderness is one of the few regions in Washington where it does become exposed.
Climbing up to this point took me to a wonderland quite reminiscent of the granite escarpments of the Sierra Nevadas. I was in a region with glistening blue lakes surrounded by tall cliffs, craggy rocks and snow-capped peaks. I can't wait to explore more of this region before the season ends.

Colors of the sky
The Eastern Sierras is not just a desert landscape with dry granite peaks, but is a land of glistening lakes and towering mountains where mountain weather comes alive. The first one captures the reflection of the rainbow after a late afternoon thunderstorm, while the next frames the clear reflections of the mountain landscape typical of the Eastern Sierras.

Light on the Larches
When I travel outdoors, I am constantly surprised by how life clings on to the barest of environments. While I struggle to grow potted plants indoors, I have found both colorful shrubs and towering trees grow in the tiniest nooks and crannies without any additional help.
Such as this group of larches showing off their golden coat amidst the stark rocky landscape of the eastern Cascades.

Idyll in the Wild
And finally, not all winter destinations in the Pacific Northwest are of snow-covered landscapes. There are a few low-altitude destinations that are accessible year around, and provide spectacular vistas for photography on crisp winter days. This is one such location in the Olympics that I visited on a rare sunny day in the Pacific Northwest

A National Park Journey - Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake National Park was just a hop skip and jump from Redwood, relative to the overall distance we were driving. Having arrived at Crater lake with very little driving experience, I remember being afraid of even driving along the curvy rim road that winds around the massive crater. But my fear vanished as soon as I got the first sight of the massive crater.
For a big city kid, seeing a pristine lake as large as this, with a deep blue color quite unlike anything I had seen before, was a life-changing experience. I had never experienced anything of such scale, let alone a volcano whose crater had a 33-mile rim. That, coupled with the stark alpine scenery of the surrounding Cascades, made for an unforgettable first visit.
My second trip to this park was more than 16 years later in less than ideal weather conditions, but it was enough to spark the joy of being in this very unique National Park. This particular image, however, is one of my first attempts at a panorama from my first visit.

A lake, a cabin, a church, a mountain
A lake, a cabin, a church, a mountain.
That was all I remember seeing in the brochure about Königssee. But in a span of just a few hours there, I came to realize that this wonderful little corner of Germany had so much more to offer: alpine views rivaling the Swiss Alps, the convivial atmosphere of a traditional biergarten, the camraderie of German hikers, and hundreds of delightful surprises everywhere.
I did manage to tick off all the bucket-list items in the brochure, but Königssee left me wanting for more. So while doing my part to reduce the spread of Covid-19, I get to reminisce my past travels, and look forward to creating more travel bucket-lists when travel to these amazing destinations is once again possible.
